- painful: sore とおおむね同義。most commonly usedとあるので,こちらの方がよりメジャーか。コーパスによると，painful=14per/m，sore=7per/mくらい。 can describe a part of the body, an injury, or a movement as painful ↔ painless , soreとの違いについて気になったので，もう少し調べている。
- tender: 触れたとき（when touched）に痛いと感じる場合につかう。冷たいものを飲んだり食べたりしたときに，歯が痛いとか，熱いものにふれたりしたときなど。
- sensitive: tenderとほとんど同義。
painfulとsoreの違いーSKELLによる検討
共起語を調べてみると，
- painful: stimulus(刺激), memory(記憶), urination(排尿), spasm(けいれん), sensation(知覚，感覚), emotion(感情), intercourse(性交), ulcer(潰瘍), surgery(手術), walking(歩行), wound(傷)など
- sore: canker(潰瘍), throat(のど), ankle(足首), knee(ひざ), shoulder(肩), neck(首), muscle(筋肉), finger(ゆび)など
上記のように，soreは「体の一部」を明示して「痛い」ことを言うのに対して，painfulは行為や状態が「痛ましい」「痛々しい」ことを，比喩的なニュアンスも含めて表現すると考えられる。したがって，painfulの方が広義の単語であり，使用頻度が2倍ほど高いと思われる。

- The previous sore throat had lasted six weeks. (以前ののど痛が6週間続いている。)
- Recovering from sore muscles due to weight trainings takes about 72 hours. (ウェイトトレーニングによる筋肉痛の回復には，およそ72時間かかる。)
- The painful memory breaking up of my girl-friend has been left on my heart all the way. (彼女との別れの思い出が痛々しく残っている。)
