The possum, a native of Australia, was introduced to establish a fur industry but is now the greatest wildlife pest of New Zealand.
- pest: 害獣，害虫（病気のペストではない）
Unfortunately, ordinary house cats went off into the wild as well and established feral populations.
- go off: 逃げ出す
- 逃げ出す以外にも，いくつも意味がある。
- たとえば，stop workingの意で使われる。
- The damage to the fuse-box caused the power to go off.
- The light goes off when the lightning struk.
- ほかに，noiseの意でも使われる。
- alarm goes off The alarm goes off when the smoke is detected.
- alarm clock goes off I couldn't get up although the alarm clock went off.
- feral: 野生の（この問題は，これが理解できないと結構苦しい）
- 動物や生物，あるいはそれにかかわる名詞が共起する。
- ここでは，populationsで，「野生の個体群」を表す。

- bring about: をもたらす，引き起こす（to cause something to happen）
- Science has brought about the technological revolution.
- 類義語はいくつかある：主たるものとして，以下などが挙げられる。*1
- cause: もっともよく使われる（the most common verb）。特に，結果や影響が好ましくない（bad）時に使う。
- bring about: なにかほかのもの（something else）によって，引き起こされるようなニュアンスがあるときに使う。
- result in, lead to: bring aboutより因果が強く出る。A result in Bで，AがBを引き起こす，という意味になる。
- bring aboutよりかなり高頻度（SKELLでは，lead to: 170/M, result in: 120/M, bring about: 12/M）
- 論文をはじめとする理科系の作文ではよく使うように思う。
- Higher economic growth results in higher inflation.
- Increase in collisions between particles leads to reduce electrical conductivity of high-temperature gas.
