留学生への通訳・conversation
とあるTourがあり，知り合いの留学生（Ph.D Student）へ，見学内容を通訳してあげることになった。日本語での説明だけだったので，要所をかいつまんで説明した。見学は，自身の専門に近いところだったし，彼女も分野は同じだから，ある程度は伝わった。
そのあとの大学までの帰り道でのConversationも，まあまあ最低限のことは伝わったかな？と思う。
一方で，
- 日常的な会話表現（特に，疑問形）
- 考えたことを即座に英文化する能力
- 長めのフレーズを作り，すぐに話すちから
がまだまだ足りないな，と思った。
彼女もnon-nativeなのだが，自分よりは余程上手に話す。自分が言い淀んだところは，意思を汲んで，「こういうこと？」と的確な単語・フレーズをsupportしてくれる。日本語はまったく（ほとんど？）わからないから，留学してからは英語でしかcommunicationできなかったに違いない。そういう状況であれば，嫌でも英語でのcommunicationは高まるのだろう。
真のSpeaking力・Communication力を身につけるためには，とにかく英語しか使えないところへ，ある程度長い期間，身を置くのが，いちばん手っ取り早いと思う体験だった。

I think that at the moment they seem to be quite overblown.

Lots of people absolutely want there to be scientific proof for health claims (栄養機能表示) on food and drink because there still is a fair amount of scepticism (かなり懐疑的), distrust (信用しない→不信感), and general confusion around functionality (機能性).
